Historic Oakland Foundation - Sunday in the Park

*The event has already taken place on this date: Sun, 09/30/2018
Back before cities built public parks, average people would bring a picnic basket and some musical instruments (and maybe a few adult libations) to the local cemetery and revere the dead by celebrating life in what was often one of the only patches of public space in town.

Please help us keep this calendar up to date! If this activity is sold out, canceled, or otherwise needs alteration, email mindy@kidsoutandabout.com so we can update it immediately. If you have a question about the activity itself, please contact the organization administrator listed below.

Our annual Sunday in the Park event, now in its 40th year, hails from this tradition. On September 30, Oakland Cemetery visitors can enjoy living history theatre performances, tours, an artists’ market, food trucks, live music, storytelling, crafts for kids, and a historical costume contest as they explore how the Cemetery, surrounding neighborhoods, and the city have changed over time and celebrate the local communities that make Oakland what it is today.

Living History – Rich or poor, black or white, famous or infamous, every resident’s story here at Oakland Cemetery shines a light on the beautiful mosaic that is Atlanta’s rich history. Actors relate the stories of Atlantans like Selena Sloan Butler, a Georgia Woman of Achievement who, in 1911, started the nation’s first black PTA and immeasurably improved the lives of African American children in Atlanta.
